What is Korean Philosophy? It is controversial whether Korean Philosophy refers to traditional thoughts in the history of Korea or contemporary thoughts in Korea today. One definition is retrospective, the other definition is prospective. But the opposition between these two definitions would not be seen important, when reflecting the fundamental fact that our retrospection of the past and our prospection of the future are interwoven inseparably and interact with each other. On the dimension of this fundamental fact, the most important factor in defining Korean Philosophy is the depth of philosophical thinking which is acquired through circular repetitions of learning(學) and thinking(思).
Of course the essence of philosophical thinking is thinking itself in the incessantly changing situations of our living to open the future. But if finite human beings cannot think without learning language, no one can participate in philosophical thinking without learning various histories of philosophy east and west. In fact the interaction of learning the past philosophical thoughts and thinking about the future in the present situation is the only way which leads our philosophical thinking to arrive at its depth, but our philosophical thinking cannot be ended because our learning and thinking are always imperfect. And it must not be forgotten that our humble questions about the past and future, questioned on the basis of self-awareness of ignorance, is the decisive momentum to deepen our learning and thinking, and to deepen our philosophical thinking.
Then, regardless of how to define Korean Philosophy, any intellectual endeavor of Korean people past or present, only if it is guaranteed that it arrives at the depth of philosophical thinking, could be registered as Korean Philosophy. And given that our philosophical thinking is endlessly deepening one in its nature, all the intellectual endeavors called as Korean Philosophy must be Thinking on the Way, which is destined never to arrive at its end. Korean Philosophy as a deep philosophical thinking of Korean people not only was implicated in the thoughts of great philosophers in the history of Korea but also is being created nowadays by some excellent philosophers such as Kim Hyung-hyo in Academy of Korean Studies.
Most scholars in Korea, having nationalistic orientation, seem to agree that Korean Philosophy is nothing more than studying the traditional thoughts of Korea, whereas some scholars influenced by the western philosophical tradition maintain that the core of Korean Philosophy must be philosophical thinking distinct from the historical knowledge of traditional thoughts. These two extreme positions are all erroneous in view of the concrete process of our philosophical thinking. As stated above, learning and thinking are two complementary factors in deepening our philosophical thinking. To create living Korean Philosophy in the 21th. century, at first we must learn to have knowledge of various philosophical traditions, and then we must think deep about our time to open the future.
