"Samgyunism" of Cho Soang is a political theory based on the principles of three equalities which are 'equality between people,' 'equality between nations,' and 'equality between states.' Following these principles, this theory aims at the mediation of class conflicts, the construction of a reunified nation-state, and the promotion of peaceful international society.
Samgyunism has liberty and equality as its essential elements. Also, it successfully harmonizes universal validity and Korean particularity in its theoretical framework. Samgyunism should be re-emphasized as a national unification strategy which can overcome the division of the Korean peninsula and rebuild unified nation-state of Korea in the 21st century.
This article attempts to analyze Samgyunism. It discusses the ideological character and theoretical value of Samgyunism as a re-unification strategy. It also discusses the limits of Samgyunism in the context of divided Korea in the late 1940s.
