This thesis aims to briefly deal with some aspects of Wang Ji De's theory of plays.
Wang Ji De has a balanced view concerning plays. accepting the affective function of plays as positive as well as regarding the teaching function as very important.
His theory of language takes a middle-of-the-road position between highly embellished sentences and pure sentences: that is. he demanded that the words should be popular but not too vulgar. and that the lyrics should be graceful but accord with the melodies.
He prohibited too complicated beginning and too simple storyline. and attached much importance to the sequential flow of the story. And he insisted that playwrights should pour specially great efforts into the parts which have more importance than others.
Of the substance of the plays. he insisted that playwrights should convey the truth of reality through the form of fiction: and of the characters. that thoughts and feelings should be expressed from the standpoint of the characters. The character description. especially the words the character says, should accord with the character's social environments and social status.
Wang Ji De's theory of plays is all contained in his Qu Lit This book is the first complete theoretical work in China that deals with plays in all their features. So it takes great efforts and intellectual ability to exhaustively discuss his theory in the book. For this reason. I had to regrettably confine myself to a discussion basic in its depth and scope. But this thesis. I hope. can be a step forward towards a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of Wang Ji De's theory of plays.
