The present study examined the current state, meanings and problems of Korean translations of Japanese postwar literature on the theme of World War Ⅱ particularly focused on Nobi by Ooka Shohei (1909~1988). This work is evaluated as the best masterpiece of Japanese postwar literature, but for Korean readers, the victims of World War Ⅱ, the novel cannot be read merely as a literary work and in fact it gives a sense of incongruity. The present study looked for the cause of the sense of incongruity, and examined how the cause is linked to the main character’s perception on war as well as how Korean readers accept evaluation of the work in Japan. What is more, we thought about how to deal with the issue of perception on war when expanding the scope of translation not just to literal translation but to the translation of culture or historical consciousness.
According to the result, it was found that Nobi can be read as Ooka’s excuse toward international society for brutal deeds by the remnants of defeated Japanese army during the delicate time under the occupation of GHQ and economic boom due to the outbreak of the Korean War in the early 1950s, the historical background of the work. What should be noted here, however, is that the more heartbreaking the Japanese soldiers’ situation is, the more tragic their end is and the more severe moral criticism of their cruel acts is, the more their image as criminals is covered up and the more their image as the victims of the reckless and unjustifiable stands out. If Korean readers felt a sense of incongruity from this work, such a feeling might come from the nature of the novel.
The worry that fictional images created through literary works might exercise influence on people’s real life was actualized when such images were used in neo conservatives’ logic at the end of the 1990s. Of course, the situation would not be intended by Ooka but his work is highly likely to be used in such logic. The characteristic of the novel is not a negligible issue at all to Korean readers who are not free from past history and cannot lower their guard in the relation between Korea and Japan.
