Korea has gone through many stages in establishing democracy, from the founding of the nation and the territorial division following the Korean War to rapid industrialization. Until 1987, there were many difficulties in stabilizing democracy in Korea. In the end, the June Struggle for Democratization in 1987 became the turning point for Korea to tear down the military dictatorship and move forward to democratic transition. The democratic transition in Korea was successful as compared to those of other developing countries. At least, Korean democratic evolution has not proceeded after the collapse of the political system or economic crises like in other countries. Theoretical meaning can be summarized from this study as follows. Firstly, a breakdown of authoritarianism itself is not a sufficient condition for the success of democratization. Secondly, The June Struggle for Democratization served as a new take-off opportunity that brought about positive changes in the relationship between the state, political society, and civil society. Thirdly, further research is needed still to come to a conclusion about the relation between authoritarianism and industrialization
