The purpose of this paper is to investigate Douglas MacArthur's perception of Korea between 1945 and 1950. It is widely accepted in Korean society that MacArthur was considerably concerned about Korea. But he had estimated Korea to be low in terms of her strategic value or state during this time. in the beginning, he had taken China into consideration until China became communist in 1949. After that, his interest in Japan increased. As it was, his perception of Korea at this point was just subjected to that of Japan.
However, his attitude toward Korea was shown differently in the media of the period. He asserted Korea's geographical importance and even mentioned that he would become the bulwark against communism. But there was discrepancy in his discourse. His real intension was not for the sake of Korea but to establish America's superior structure around the Pacific Ocean.
It was not until the Korean War broke out that MacArthur became concerned with Korea and recognized her strategic value. Yet this misperception has led to the formation of the myth of MacArthur in our surroundings.
