This essay has the object, through studying the nature images of Jung Ji-yong' poetry, to grasp a topography of a view of nature in Korean modern poetry in the 1930's. In general, the view of nature in Korean poetry, at the distance of aesthetics, has been valued from the metaphysics and existential standard of moralistic intention. However, the poet's realistic distance and physical experiences about natural things and the environment create a 'landscape' which represents a sort of formative space and time instead of creating 'nature' which represents the metaphysical back ground.
Jung Ji-yong's poetry is close to a traditional view of nature for this reason; It approached the source with an existed perspective from direct experience over nature to the space of death & life. But, such direct experience is different from the poet's tradition because it is apart from the detailed experience of life which includes poverty, like Han-san. But then, even though lung Ji-yong's poetry, brought an existential source from nature, it did not stem from traditional metaphysics, moralist, or metaphysical experiences. Also, it is performed through a sensitive experience about nature on purpose. So, we can find that his consciousness for nature is separate from the traditional view of nature.
Obviously, Jung Ji-yong did not think of the nature of space for existence itself. Modem times make humans blind with human's estrangement, because a human weighs nature. It is clear because Jung Ji-yong's poetry did not accept such concealment from nature as part of a tendency in poems. However, the most obvious thing is that the nature of Jung Ji-yong is different from any other traditional poet's-every natural thing appears possibile that makes 'Others' absorb the 'Self' equally. In Jung Ji-yong's poetry, we can know the fact the nature is not 'an sich'(卽自). It is a topic to raise after the 20th century. Yet, it is the age of Jung Ji-yong that crossed a ever to foreign countries and into the brightness of the modem age.
In Jung Ji-yong's poetry, we can find an attempt that discovers the 'Being' of nature from the sensitive experiences over things and the effort to connect the space to humans. In that point, 'sensitive experience' and 'landscape as space may offer the view that can summarize all the poetry of Jung Ji-yong. His poetic world for sensitive modernism and his intention of a traditional view of nature-can lead to an expansive and deeper discussion.
