The purpose of this study was to explore the level and the predictors of depression in parents caring for adult schizophrenic patients in Korea. The sample consisted of 82 parent caregivers recruited from outpatient clinics of mental hospitals, day care centers for the mentally ill, and family self-help groups. The level of depression was examined in relation to demographic variables, stressors, and resources. The findings show that over one half of parent caregivers were experiencing mild to severe depression. Bivariate analyses indicated that the level of depression was significantly higher among mothers, less educated, those who felt greater subjective burden and stigma, had negative prognosis about the patient' s future, those who had no secondary caregiver, and those who received low emotional support from family. A multivariate analysis also showed that age, being mothers, low educational level and a greater sense of subjective burden were significant predictors of higher depression for the parent-caregivers. Based on these findings, implications for interventions to alleviate parent caregivers' depression were also discussed.
