Caregiving for an elder with dementia can be extremely challenging responsibility. Not only is the actual work of providing care physically and emotionally difficult, but also caregivers face additional risk of becoming socially isolated as caregiving demand more and more of their time Caregivers of psychological outcomes, therefore, have been negatively described by the professional studies and conceptualized as caregiver distress, burden, and depression. Caregivers` high level of stress and depression are among the most common factors related to their psychological well-being. Social support has been considered one of the most important factors in maintaining people` psychological well-being. However, the role of social support between stress and depression is not clearly addressed by literuture. The buffer model posits that any beneficial effect of social support derives primarily from its protective properties int the presence of high levels of stress, while the direct effect model posits that social support enhance well-being irrespective of the stress level. Also, social support functions as an intervening variable between stressor and outcome. This study will provide an understanding of how and under what conditions social support is effective for caregivers of elders with dementia.
