Birds, Beasts and Flowers may be read as a single work detailing an adventure into the underworld, the self of the speaker and, ideally, the self of the reader. Through the journey toward the underworld, the self becomes a metaphoric representation of the allotropic transformations common to all living things. The Holy Ghost existing within all living things from the smallest cell to the living universe is the life energy that drive them through a series of patterns embodying life and death and rebirth － the formation of a new pattern. Thus all living things exist through movement, a characteristic progress through a series of a allotropic states. What Lawrence found in resurrection myths is a language of metaphors informed by a world-view coherent with his own, a counterpart to his own attempts to provide alternatives to the mechanistic paradigm. The ‘down’ and ‘up’ movements of death and resurrection myths provide important metaphors for the transformation of the speaker and readers’ mechanistic epistemology.
