The main purpose of this study is to investigate the political characteristics of Seowon(書院), the private Confucian academies and Sawoo(祠宇), the memorial halls in Cheongju area during the Joseon dynasty.
Originally, in both the purposes of foundation and the functions, there were significant differences between Seowon, the private Confucian academies, and Sawoo, the memorial halls during the Joseon dynasty. However, After the time of King Sukjong(肅宗), the rapidly increased number of those made it difficult to divide them. The reasons were that the status of the subjects to whom Seowon performed memorial services fell off, those figures becoming as same as Sawoo′s, and that Sawoo, while carrying out the function of teaching with its new facility Gangdang(講堂), was changed into like Seowon.
The first Seowon established around the Cheongju area was the Shinhang Seowon(莘巷書院) that was founded at the 3th of King Sonjo(宣祖)′s period (1570). It′s influence was strengthened as it gained the hanging board, which implied authorization from the dynasty, through the political power of Song Si Yeol(宋詩烈) and Song Jun Gil(宋浚吉) who had, based on Shinhang Seowon, been expanding their influences into the Cheongju area
The subjects honored from about 20 of Seowon and Sawoo were almost the influential ancestry of local literati in their family. As the three persons of Song Si Yeol, Song Jun Gil and Lee Deuk Yun(李得胤) were respected from more than two Seowon, we may know Song Si Yeol and Song ]un Gil were very powerful and Lee Deuk Yun was also revered in the local community. Seowon and Sawoo in the Cheongju area functioned as a central axis for the local literati to closely bond together along factional lines among the changes of the late Joseon Dynasty′s politics, and even the status of the figures they honored were not so great. Because great persons such as Lee Yi (李珥) and Song Si Yeol were honored even in other provinces, all of Seowon and Sawoo were closed by the ‘Removal Act of Seowon’ at the time of King Gojong(高宗) except ‘Phyochoongsa(表忠詞)’ that was established by current officials and reflected legitimate succession of the throne.
About 20 of Seowon and Sawoo were founded in the Cheongju area after the establishment of Shinhang Seowon, comprising about 21% of those in the Chungcheong province(忠淸道), and 15 of the 20 were built from the 20th(1694) year to the 28th(1702) year of King Sukjong in the stream of the competition between the faction for Noron(老論, Old Doctrines) and the faction against Noron. It has been known that there were 10 of Seowon and Sawoo in the Noron line and 8 of those in the anti-Noron line. Though this corresponded with the fact that Seowon and Sawoo were nationally established around the time, it reflected the fact that many of those having a memorial service for Song Si Yeol were set up across the country but not in the Cheongju area. It demonstrates that there were much in the atmosphere of the anti-Noron in the Cheongju area. However, the overall Naron power was finally spreaded even to the Cheongju area under the political control of Noron after the late of Sukjong′s reign. ‘The rebellion of Lee In Jwa(李麟佐)’ occurred in Cheongju at the 4th of Yeongjo(英祖)′s period was an incident that we may see the potential complaints coming out of Soron(小論, Young Doctrines) and Namin(南人, Southerners) under the strong might of Naron. Therefore, we shouldn′t treat the characteristics of all Sarim(士林) in Cheongju area as a part of Seoin(西人, Westerners} nor think it was under the control of Hoseo-Sarim(湖西士林).
