This paper draws on Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta to explore motherhood, mothering, and womanhood in Africa. Because Joys of Motherhood is a very complex novel, only issues of motherhood as played out in the characters Nnu Ego and Adaku, the wives of Nnaife, are highlighted. Themes on mothering, motherhood, and womanhood are interwoven within the narratives that emphasize the patriarchal conditions that women find themselves in. This analysis reveals that literature, while imaginative, could also be used for a systematic study of social issues and everyday experiences of a particular people. Many times, writers focus on social, political, and economic conditions of a given society. However, from fiction, one could draw conclusions about governance, value systems, and structures that regulate the members of a community and also infer the gendered apparatus that sustains the patriarchal conditions experienced by women in the process of mothering. Joys of motherhood becomes a bitter pill to swallow, not only for the characters in the book, but for the reader. Emecheta succeeds in providing vivid images of the exploitation of women's bodies and their endurance and denial, all in the name of motherhood.
