Using data from the Korean 1996 Survey of Family Income and Expenditures, this study examined expenditure patterns of Korean women aged 60 and over. Food at home, housing, ceremony and ceremonial gifts, personal care, and health care comprised the largest share of their budget. This study also compared the level of their consumption expendituresto that of older men, while taking economic and other socio-demographic factors into account. The effect of gender was significant for food at home, food away from home, housing appliances and services, health care, transportation and communication, and personal care. Multivariate Tobit analysis indicated total expenditures (as proxy for permanent income) had a significant and positive association with all expenditure categories.
