The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) has proposed the construction of company towns as a means to boost Korea's investment inflow, create jobs, sustain industrial competitiveness, incubate future-growth engines, and contribute to a more balanced national development. The key concept of a company town is a self-sufficient municipality that focuses on a core competitive industry. Ideally, the company town should also include infrastructure (e.g. R&D centers), distribution systems, housing, education, medical institutions and cultural facilities. In particular, it is essential that the location chosen should incorporate some geographical advantage to increase industrial competitiveness, thereby bringing added synergies by inviting companies and research centers to such a location. In short, a company town should be an industrial hub surrounded by a residential-friendly environment.
