Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hand therapy (Seoambong) on the indexes of obesity in middle-aged women and their experiences during the treatment period.
Method: Seventeen Korean women aged between 35 and 64 were participated in this study. The main outcome measures were Kim’s(1999) menopausal symptoms scale with modification, Radloff’s(1977) CES-D(The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale) and Inbody 3.0(Biospace, Korea). All of the participants were asked to apply self hand therapy(Seoambong) on the corresponding points for abdominal obesity every day for 6 weeks. Participants were asked to complete the questionnaires and to be taken Inbody 3.0 before and after the treatment. In the end of the study, participants were interviewed with a question, “How did you feel the hand therapy?” Data were statistically analysed using SPSS(10.0)/PC Program. Data from the interview were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis.
Result: As a result, BMI and body fat mass were reduced but these were not statistically significant. The menopausal symptom scores and the depression scores were not significantly changed after the study. Three concepts were derived from the interview data about their experiences of hand therapy: ‘discomfort’, ‘novel experience’ and ‘good for health’.
Conclusion: Although our study demonstrates the effect of hand therapy for abdominal obesity for middle-aged women, the data could not show statistically significant results. This might be because of insufficient time length. Further studies which can examine long-term effects of the hand therapy within a longer period are needed.
