The design of this ink cake in illustrated in Cheng Dayue's album Chengshi moyuan of 1606, where the title in seal-script characters appears above the palace scene. A native of Yanzhen, Shexian, in Anhui province, Cheng Dayue was one of the most famous inkmakers of the Ming period.
The fitted lacquer box that accompanies this ing cake depicts several gentleman in a landscape with pines, water, and distant mountains. The style of the painting, particularly the proportion of the figures to the landscape, relates closely to that of Wanli period painted lacquers, indicating that the box is contemporaneous with the ink cake. The preparation of a fine box at the time of manufacture suggests that this ink cake was not made to be used, but merely to be enjoyed and appreciated by connoisseurs.
