The aim of this study was to evaluate gastrointestinal event of solid meal in conscious mature miniature pigs. Mature miniature pigs were divided into two groups; Group 1 was fed a normal finely ground solid diet mixed with barium sulfate and Kolomark<SUP>®</SUP> as radiography marker. Group 2 was fed a normal finely ground solid diet mixed with the same amount of water and Kolomark<SUP>®</SUP> as group 1. Both groups were evaluated the gastrointestinal event of solid meal by plain radiography and image-intensified fluoroscopy. The results of our study showed swallowing movement, gastric emptying time (GET) and motility, total intestinal transit time (TITT), which were made in 2 groups after feeding a test meal. In the group 1, results of radiographic and fluoroscopic findings revealed that gastric emptying commenced within 15 minutes and barium was extensively distributed in the small intestine within 10 hours of ingestion of the test meal, however these could not be confirmed in the group 2. GET was taken within 24 hours and TITT was taken more than 72 hours in both groups. Type I and II gastric contraction wave could not be observed during this study period in both groups. Image-intensified fluoroscopy and radiography using barium sulfate and Kolomark<SUP>®</SUP> enabled estimation of intragastric distribution, gastric motility, GET and TITT of solid meal in conscious mature miniature pigs. These data will be useful for oral administration of therapeutics to miniature pig and human research using the miniature pig model.
