Digital mobile communication(DMC) and its technologies have become an icon of digital convergence in broadcasting and telecommunication. Especially, Digital Mobile Broadcasting(DMB) service will provide us with various multimedia services, including network TV programs, movies, music videos, and so on. Under these circumstances, the purpose of this study was to examine (1) the effects of usage of DMC use on traditional media use(TMU); (2) the purpose of mobile phone use and satisfaction; (3) the users' perception of mobile phone and its services; and, finally, (4) the users' intention to use DMB services.
To achieve the goals, the study conducted a survey among teenagers and young adolescents, aged from 10's to early 20's. The sampled individuals were male and female students who were considered the most powerful mobile-phone users.
The results indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between usage of DMC and TMU, including TV, newspaper, Internet and the index of traditional media use. That is, the DMC did not replace the TMU, which showed the possibility that DMC can "coevolve and coexist" with the traditional media. A factor analysis was conducted to produce a total of 5 factors of the mobile phone users' motive: entertainment, sociality, fashion, instrumental and safety. These factors were used to further analyze the correlations with DMC. Particularly, the relationships between various mobile Internet services and the factors were strongly interrelated one another. Finally, the users' intention to use DMB services was low in general, although heavy users were more likely to use DMB service than light users of mobile-phone.
