There are some place-names their etymologies, morphemes and meanings are analyzed wrongly. In the same way, the morpheme {-구미/-kumi/} which is an affix of the Korean place-names is also analyzed wrongly too. They are summarized as fallow;
Lee, Don-ju(1965:11O-113) insisted that {-구미/kumi/} is one of the allomorphs of the {-기미/-kimi/} and {-기미/-kimi/} was made from the {-기/-ki/ + -미/-mi/} which is a compound suffix.
Choi, Beom-hun(l984:50) insisted that {-구미/-kumi/} corresponds to the Manchurian 'kueimai(水邊) and the allomorphs {-귀미I-kymi/, -기미/-kimi/, -지미-/jimi/} transformed from the morpheme {-구미/-kumi/} and this morpheme was used only in the place-names of seaside and riverside but later this morpheme was used widely in the place-names of villages, fields, valleys and mountains etc--.
In this paper, my opinions are summarized as fallow:
(1) The etymology of the allomorphs {-구미/-kumi/, -귀미/-kymi/, -기미/-kimi/, -지미/-jimi/} is the {-구미/-kumi/} that corresponds to the Manchurian 'kueimai(水邊)'. Those allomorphs are transformed from the morpheme {-구미/-kumi/} . This may be explained by phonological theory.
(2) Today, the morpheme {-구미/-kumi/} are used not only in the placenames of seaside but also in the place-names of inland. From this view point, the meaning of the morpheme {-구미/-kumi/} which meaned 'seaside' was enlarged to the names of villages, valleys and fields.
