Elder care is a major social issue in many industrialised nations. In Japan, women have historically been obliged to care for their kin because of their traditional gender roles. This kind of practice was mostly based upon ideas of their family lineage, kinship obligation and gendered care giving. However, the current trend of their care has been declined due to socio-economic factors and policy imperatives, e.g., changes of the Japanese society, changes of gender roles, demographic pressures and economic factors. This paper tries to analyse elder care and Japanese women by the concepts of the Japanese family system, their family lineage called the le, and changing roles of Japanese women in the Japanese society. In conclusion, several findings about the Japanese society indicate that the trend of elder care has been transforming from family based care to community based care for which the government is more responsible than before.
