The purpose of this study is to assess the state of women’s health in post-Cold War Africa, and to identify the major factors that may have contributed to its improvement or deterioration. The study is based on the compilation and analysis of data collected from the publications and online database of the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the International Peace Research Institute and Uppsala Conflict Data Program. The study reveals that women’s health, as measured in terms of life expectancy, has dramatically deteriorated in post-Cold War Africa. The poverty of most African countries, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, and the occurrence of armed conflicts are identified as the major factors that have contributed to this deterioration.
