Killing because of violation of honour is an increasing problem in the western world as well as in Japan. In the western world - especially amongst people of Turkish origin - it is about killing as revenge because of the violation of honour. In Japan it is about suicide because of violation of honour. Killing because of violation of honour caused a big shock in western - in this case Dutch - society. It is a subject of discussion in parliament and in society in general, not only because of the killing, but also because of the fact that victims mostly are women who made a choice to live their own lives.
Violation of honour in Japan is completely different. It is not against women, but it has to do with someone’s feeling of personal failure in relation to him - or herself and the community. In Japan nowadays things are getting out of hand: even collective suicides, organised via internet are practiced. Even the government is taking measures now.
The article is about the differences in cultural backgrounds. Some suggestions are made how to handle these problems. In the Middle-East cultures the stimulation of feminism and in Japan the stimulation of a more open culture are promoted.
