This essay takes focus on introducing David Cannadine's historical researches to readers. The important themes in his studies are the aristocracy and the empire, which revisionist historians have emphasized as essential factors of the continuity in British history. Cannadine tried, however, to attach importance not on 'continuity' but on 'change' in British history. In representing the decline and fall of the aristocracy he emphasized the change of British society.
Recently Cannadine presented readers an interpretation to understand the British Empire newly. It is called 'ornamentalism', which is the term helping us to realize the fact that the British empire had been based upon the co - relationship of human networks among the upper class in Britain, white settlements and colonies. His recent study on the British empire is an effort to overcome the limits of economic interpretation and peripheral theory on imperialism.
Cannadine is well - known to British readers as a contemporary historian, an excellent critic and a good broadcaster. He is one of the most famous historians in Britain. Now he is interested in the relation between the empire and globalization. His further studies would help us to understand imperialism and globalization more accurately.
