In spite of the silence of the Korean scholarship on the history of Manchukuo, its relationship with Korea (or Chosun) was so close in the 1930s. It was even an inalienable one, if we use the official catch phrase ("Manchuria-Chosun, one body") of the time. Fever of migrating to Manchuria spread the Korean peninsula in mid 1930s.
However, the passage was not so smooth as one between colonies. It was not the one between semi-periphery and periphery, either. For the sovereign state form of Manchukuo exercised the formal limit between them.
Also, there existed Manchukuo between Japan and Chosun (and the postliberated Korea) in several realms of influence, particularly in disciplining body and mobilization. For instance, social mobilization in prewar Japanese society influenced Chosun and Korean society through murderous experiments in Manchukuo. This is the main reason that we should pay serious attention to Manchukuo in the contemporary Korean history. Hence, exploring the reason why the relationship between Manchukuo and Korea was hidden in the past scholarship will be a future research project.
