This paper pursues an understanding of religious melancholy from the perspective of psychology of religion. This paper leads to an understanding of melancholy, not merely as pathology, but also as attitude or temperament having some positive implications for religion. For this, this paper begins with the Bible verse, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). By drawing on Sigmund Freud, William James, and Donald Capps, an attempt to point out the inner dynamics (or struggles) of those who mourn and the meaning of “being comforted” for them is made. These psychological understandings may pave a way for a richer understanding of the Bible verse and religious melancholy.
