This essay was the keynote presentation for the conference about Korean literature and language in nineteenth century. On Korean literature history, nineteenth century can be estimated as the very fore-step to the modern transition in epoch-making twentieth century. Hence, nineteenth century is the solstice of Korean traditional society and culture. Reviewing Korean literature history, the reappraisal of chasm between tradition and modern should be required as considerable issue. Though, herewith it, we shall speculate the contextual fact around discontinuance between nine teenth century and twentieth century in literature history. Through reviewing, I represent 'Chwi(趣, taste)' as the gist for analyzing literary arts from eighteenth century to nineteenth century. As comprehending social improvement of taste for literary art, core issue of Korean literature history can be captured. Also, the advent of culture consuming petitbourgeois is the problematic point of nineteenth century literature which can be interpreted as the inclining to vulgarism.
