This paper tries to answer three research questions concerning the direct quotations of information sources in the newspaper’s campaign-related news stories during the 2007 presidential election periods, including primary elections, in Korea. First, we investigated how different was the use of direct quotation according to both the election phase(primary vs. general) and the newspaper companies. Analyzed were four newspaper companies(Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, and Hankyoreh) in terms of the content and frequency of quotations, and the types of quoted information source. As a result, most dominant was a presidential candidate as a source and the campaign strategy rather than the policy issue in quoted theme, although both were little different along with election phase. Secondly, we examined the extent to which the quotations were ended with subjective or objective verb. It has been found that a large number of news stories delivered simply a source’s accounts without any subjective verb. Finally, we explored the ways in which a source’s accounts were presented in a news story by way of analyzing the purpose(acclaim, attack or defend) and theme(policy or personal character) of the source’s account in the quotes. As a result, we found that a presidential candidate was presented to acclaim his or her virtues or advantages in the direct quotation regardless of the accounts’ theme.
