Lee Heup, a poet who is making infrequent appearances in Korean literature, is not a familiar name to the public. Born in Korea under Japanese rule, he produced only 43 pieces of poetry before dying tragically near the beginning of the Korean War. Still, his poetry deserves new apprehension in the context of building up anti-Japanese sprit in modern Korean poetry. Unlike Lee Mu-young, a life time friend of Lee Heup and favorable of Japan, he gave up writing and kept his integrity.
Poems like "Grief of Autumn", "Today and Tomorrow" and "Lute Playing Elegy" show his sprit for standing against Japanese rule with great dignity.
After Korean liberation, he started to publish his work with socialist tendencies.
It was not because he was a socialist but because he was a poet with a strong sense of justice.
We can find works like, "Follow You", "Embracing Stars" and "There is a Night Standing Still" expressing abundant emotion as well as a strong sense of righteousness.
Since not many researchers have gone over his work or his life, he hasn't received the appropriate recognition for his work. The more information we discover, the more the value of his existence will berevealed. For now, we have just begun the long journey in finding out about him and his life.
