The Tumpet-Major is certainly not a great success, but the novel has some positive qualities worth mentioning. Its theme is time, which takes on a different perspective than it does anywhere else in Hardy' s fiction.
The plot of The Trumpet-Major centers about the love of two men for the same girl. Physical attraction accounts for the beginning of love. The girl, Anne, is coquettish; she tries equally hard to attract men whom she loves and men whom she does not love; her impulsive thoughtless actions often have disastrous effects upon those who are fond of her. Although the two brothers, John and Bob, contend for the girl's love amicably enough to fit in with the pastoral tone of the novel, their friendly battle ends quite as a more serious conflict might. Because a woman rarely chooses the worthier when she perversely desires the less worthy. Anne chooses the sailor Bob, who would have easily forgotten Anne if there were other girls about to make love to. She also rejects the more steadfast John, whose reason is unable to convince him that he should not care. Hardy points out the unhappiness implicit in such an ending.
Time is personified in The Trumpet-Major, and it is felt as a dominating presence throughout the novel. Time also has its part to play because we see the years of carking unhappiness stretching away from this moment. Through his setting Hardy intensifies and solidifies the theme of time which is conveyed by the misfortunes of his characters and dramatizes the forces of time which play with men's lives, as seen in all of his fiction and most of his poems. These forces become viable only when given focus in symbols or events.
In The Trumpet-Major, the events both of the Napoleonic wars and the dramatic action involving the love affair are enclosed by a "time perspective" stretching far into the past and into the future. Time in The Trumpet-Major is a dominating presence, its implicit message, occasionally made explicit by Hardy in the tone of the Ancient Spirit of the years in The Dynasts.
