A dance, which was started as a social gathering in European Court ballrooms in the 17th century, has developed into a variety of social dances in the 19th century, fusing with both an old time music using ballet technique and a dance music seasoned with folk music.
In Korea, a dance culture was introduced between the late Joseon Dynasty and the early days of the 19th century, taking advantage of a western culture flooded along with the period of Japanese rule of Korea. The dance culture in this era was spread and settled down around government officials and upper classes; and furthermore it was settled down as a part of party culture into the intellectuals of those days such as diplomatic officials and some students studying abroad. Accordingly, the historic changes of especially dance sport introduced into Korea shall be studied through various documents and records.
This study, about the process of taking shapes of the present dance sports, has done by the historic research through deductive method; and has reached the following conclusions based on data from documentary records by linking of a history of western social dance and the current dance sport development.
First, it can be said that today's dance sport has its origin in the birth of Waltz, new style of social dance in the nineteenth century. Moreover the dance sport could become the meaning of contest, a sportive competition today as the waltz and social dance were adjusted to ballroom dancing, a competitive dancing, and come into wide use by the British people in the twentieth century.
Second, it was in 1905 at a ball hosted by the official residence of the Ching Dynasty when the western social dance was first introduced into Korea. Thereafter through the entire Japanese colonial period until the historic independence day of August 15th, the social dance became popular and widely spread by America. Since then considered as dance sports and then deemed to be domestic sports especially' on the date of July 1, 1999, even it was once seen as decadent and pleasure-seeking dance. Consequently the change should be made urgently due to the sharp increase of the sport dance population today.
Third, since the primitive dance in the prehistoric age used a body language as a method to express their individual idea and feelings, we could see this wasn't quite enough to think it as a social dance. Yet it is found that in the ancient Egyptian, the Greek, the Rome and the Middle Ages, a social dance, a type of court ballroom dance for the purpose of social gathering and entertainment, was developed around the aristocracy; and later in the Renaissance period of the 15th century the carol dance in the middle age was renamed 'Parangdor' and finally 'Blanle'. When all these things considered we can infer that the various types of dance techniques based on a social dance in the Middle Ages have been developed through this process.
It can be said that one of the aristocratic dances in the 19th century, named 'Cotyyong' was originated from a carol dance in the Middle Ages. So here the thing we can know about is that the current dance sport was developed from a ballroom dance, a court dance in the past, according to the historical beginning stage of court dance 'Cotyyong' though its name and details have changed a bit through the ages.
Last but not least, in the 21st century, the dance sport, which is regarded as one of the sports games to promote the country's international dimension and prestige in the world, has developed through a number of social dances in the past. In other words, as social dance has disappeared or vanished by an ideology or social environment, otherwise as being loved by the public so far, either the current social environment or ideology requires the dance sport to be a domestic physical activity.
Despite the fact that it was popularized as a physical activity for life a bit later than the other neighboring countries like Japan, China, Taiwan, etc. not to mention the whole world, we now notice not only a growing awareness of dance sports but its big popularity as socially in cultural centers or in the Universities as cultural studies. In consequence we believe that it will certainly secure its strong position as one of the powerful sports in the near future.
