The main character and speaker of Salt (in the novel) is Bong-yearn's mother. She had three children: Bong-sik, Bong-yearn and Bong-hui(in the novel but Bong-nam in the movie). She led a tragic life whose husband had been killed by communists and son had been executed because he had been in the Communist party once. Moreaver losing her home and family, wandering, deceived and raped by a landowner, she bore Bong-hui, but finally Bong-yearn and Bong-hui perished with disease.
With these things, the novel showed the landowner's wrongdoing. The landowner raped Bong-yearn's mother who had lost her husband and had no place to go, and at last drove her away out of his farm. The scene in which Bong-yearn's mother who had nowhere to live in gave birth to a baby in other's bam showed the theme of the novel realistically: the poverty and oppression.
Working as a forste nurse, Bong-yearn's Mother tried to support her children Bong-yearn and Bong-hui, but she couldn't take care of her children because of the owner. They came to die without her help. Gang Gyeong-ae intended to emphasize the owner's inhumanity and greed and the conflicts between their classes.
Anguishing over her life, she started to smuggle salt. At those times, salt was very scarce in Gnado because of Japanese strict policy: not flowing salt into Gando. So she could make much money with it since salt was cheaper in southern region than northern.
But it was very hard for her to smuggle salt. There was a scene that a smuggling gang met with the communists. All of them were afraid of salt confiscated but the communists didn't confiscate and let them go. The communists made a speech on the reason why they had no choice but to smuggle salt and their struggles to make people free.
Bong-yeom's mother concentrated on it. Her husband killed by them and her son Bong-sik executed because of them, she had hatred against them but seeing them forgive smuggling gangs and have mercy upon people, she thought that she might have misunderstood them.
