In the early ages, Koreans could move to the Japanese Islands and settle down easily for two countries were adjacent. It was not unusual that early Koreans took along their religions. Many native Japanese were exposed to Korean immigrants' gods and came to believe in them. Ennin and Enchin who saw their master Saicho serving the god 'Hie', originated from Korea, as a guardian god of Chontae buddhism did not have any difficulty to serve Koreans gods called Joeksanmyung and Sillamyung. This paper is to address relationship between Chang Po-Go and those two gods.
There are no historical evidence to prove that the god, Joeksanmyung and Sillamyung, are directly related to Chang Po-Go. However, we can fairly postulate through some of indirect historical materials that both Enchin and Ennin acknowledged well that those gods and Chang Po-Go had connection.
During Ennin's stay in T'ang Empire as student, he was acquainted with many people from Silla, and also had lots of help from them. Especially, he could successfully finish his buddhism study with the help of Silla people who served Chang Po-Go. Without their help, he couldn't imagine to succeed in his study in T'ang Empire. This might happen because Ennin and Silla people had the same identity of bing descendants of Baekje. After all, Ennin brought the god Joek-San which had been served by Silla people and Chang Po-go to Japan and served it as the god Joeksanmyung. It might be true that Ennin's service to Joeksanmyung was motivated by his respect to Chang Po-Go and deifying him.
On the other hand, Enchin had as much appreciation of Chang Po-Go as Ennin did. When he went to T'ang Empire six years after Ennin had gone, he was accompanied by a translator, Chung-Woong-Man, the former translator of Ennin. This implies that he was mindful of the relationship with Chang Po-Go. He received a lot of help from Silla people throughout his stay in T'ang Empire. Especially, he was accustomed to the traditional Silla custom because he was a descendant of Hata family who were immigrants from Silla. he was inspired to go to Tang's Empire and to seek after truth by Ennin another descendant of Korean immigrants. therefore he had nothing against serving a god from Silla.
Although I did not deil with it in this article, we cannot deny the possibility that Enchin party might use god Sillamyung against Ennin party serving god Joeksanmyung in the battle of Chon-Tae buddhism succession. The fact that two rivalry parties of Chon-Tae buddhism represented gods of Silla respectively shows that descendent of Korean immigrants had power even in Heian era.
