In recent years, historians have become increasingly concerned over the relationship between the Nazi regime and the contemporary conservation movement in Germany. They have found that it is quite difficult to generalize on the environmental history of the Nazi era. There were not just similarities but also signifiant divergences between the Nazism and the conservationism in their conceptions of nature and their political styles. The two ideologies are overlapped in their cult of nature, anti-capitalism and longing for national regeneration. However the regionalism of the conservation movement was in itself hardly reconcilable with the Fuhrer Principles, male chauvinism and militarism of the Nazism.
The passage of the Reich Nature Protection Law in 1935 became the crucial turning point in terms that it was the most comprehensive and progressive environmental legislation of the day. The law was enthusiastically welcomed by conservationists who had disappointed with the meager accomplishments of the Weimar period. It enhanced a general boom of administrative conservation work that some conservationists called the period a "high time" for conservation. But the environmental discourses of the so-called "green wing" of the Nazis represented racist and antisemitic elements to a considerable extent. Moreover, the causes of conservation were immediately subordinated to aims of the war effort. In this context, it can be compared to a "Faustian bargain" that conservationists entered in their rapprochement to the regime during the Third Reich.
