In North Korea, it is quite important to create the words of songs as if they are verses to be sung.
In terms of form, each North Korean song is rhymed and segmented because its words are actually verses that were just created to be easily composed.
Themes of the poetic words are in most cases praise for the socio-political entity as the union of the leader, the party and the people and socialism itself and the advocation of required ideologies of the times. Besides, wishes for national unification and feelings in daily life are expressed by those words.
To make their themes better understood by people, the words of songs of North Korea often use family-related metaphors, manipulated verbal symbols, easy expressions and remarkable dominants. Additionally, rhetorical methods such as imperative, propositive, antithesis and repetition are used from time to time.
To cope with domestic and foreign political situations in the 1990s, North Korea stood itself on its own ideology even more firmly than before. Nevertheless, lots of North Korean songs consisted of words that expressed wishes for national unification and daily life-related emotions. It is very surprising that some of those songs were made to reveal personalities of their composers as poets and fundamental, pure human emotions. This is quite suggestive to what we should prepare for the upcoming era of national unification.
Finding elements that are familiar and homogeneous to the entire Korean nation is very important in studying North Korean literature because those elements may be the very basis of post-national unification Korean literature. True national unification requires not only political unification, but also the homogenization of national consciousness. and national cohesion.
1. Precisely analyzing words of songs and a variety of verses from North Korea would help find lots of elements that may be familiar and homogeneous to the entire Korean nation.
So far, North Korean verses have been studied about their contents, but little about their aesthetical forms. In future, each of the verses should be in terms of the total harmony of content and form.
