This paper critically reviews on Murakami Haruky's Tony Takitani. Tony Takitani's name is named after an American soldier's first name who had intimate relationships with his father. Tony was interested in drawing mechanical things, such as radio, bicycle, or engine, and was more skillful than any other artists in his day. His philosophy, extremely practical skills and realistic practicability, had enabled him to get the jobs that he wanted. In sum, Tony can be a person who has extremely practical skills and realistic practicability as his American-innate name suggests.
Tony's wife viewed America quite different ways from her husband. She felt happy when she purchased expensive clothes with famous brand. In other words, material prosperity surely satisfied her mental stability. According to Kato Norihiro, Tony's wife was miserable and weak. Her misery and weakness represent those of America.
Tony and Tony's wife's contradicting but co-existing spirits are almost equal to Japan's postwar society where everything was like head and tails of a coin.
Japan's postwar society began after America's ruling over Japan, and the Japanese aimed at Americanization in terms of system and civilization. Although Americanization seemed to be realized only in the appearance, Tony pointed out the fact that the real meaning of Americanization was far from the expectations.
