In this paper, I examine, by means of historical and institutional analyses, the changing aspects of Korean film culture in terms of Americanization. The central problem of Americanization consists in the tension between cultural homogenization and hybridization in the global/local nexus. In order to understand the complex process of Americanization, I distinguish four dimensions which generally constitute the film culture of a given society: production, consumption, state intervention, and collective imaginary on the transnational. We can say that the articulation of these distinct dimensions in the dynamics of globalization produces different and variable figures of Americanization. Within this theoretical framework, I examine how film has been produced and consumed in Korea since the 1990s, and by what mechanisms the government intervenes in those processes. I also highlight various types of collective imaginary on the transnational, which came to be associated with Korean film. The object of analysis focuses on the constant presence and functioning of America as desire and model. Korean cinema provides a significant site for exploring how local cultural forces are embedded and interrelated in the globalization process.
