In Russian there are numerous "caseless" noun phrases (NPs). i.e.. NPs which арреаг in the Nominative case even though there is по positive reason for the Nominative case to Ье assigned to them. There are two major groups of caseless NPs:
а) NPs where the morphological case associated with their syntactic function in the sentence is suppressed and is replaced Ьу the Nominative, as in (1):
(1) а. Шaмпaнcкoe, бутылочку Ø дайте пожалуйста.
'Champagne. NOM. give mе а bottle. please.' [Strong Тopic]
Ь. он прочитал письмо отрывок.
'Не read аn excerpt from the letter.' [Colloquial Case Loss]
с. за Москва-рекой
'beyond the Moscow river' [Appositive]
In example (lа) the NP шaмпaнскoe should normally stand in the Genitive case. but when it is strongly topicalized and fronted so far that аn inton ational pause separates it from the remainder of the sentence. it loses that case marking and Ьесотев caseless (Nominative). In colloquial Russian the same induced caselessness саn оссur without fronting. ав in (1b), where письмо becomes caseless when отрывок moves to the end of the sentence. In the арр ositive compound type illustrated in (1с). both parts normatively decline. but the first part often loses its expected morphological case marking and the reby Ьесотев caseless.
b) NPs where there is simply по syntactic source for case marking:
(2) идтн рука об руку
'walk hand in hand' [First Element of Phrasal Compound]
Example (2) illustrates а phrasal compound of the structure Noun - Prep osition - Noun. where the preposition ensures case marking of the second nоun, but nothing provides case to the first noun.
The first group of examples are mainly characteristic of а relatively colloq uial layer of the [апяцаке, whereas (2) is strictly literary. It is argued that the colloquial language illustrates the purest version of the Russian gramm atical system. containing the most vital "core" rules. and that the literary language includes а number of additional constraints upon grammatical struetures. It is typical that the less restrictive rules of the colloquial language. which govern (1). are at times also attested in the stricter literary language (2).
А formal and functional analysis is provided in terms of Chomskyan theorу from Government & Binding through Minimalism. It is claimed that case marking is necessary for semantic visibility of NPs. and that it is not obliga tory when pragmatics circumstances ensure visibility without it.
