The choice of the s-genitive v. postmodifying q-phrases is a result of a complex interplay of a number of factors in discourse level, which is basically and closely related to the word order in the clause level, beyond the NP level. Five factors suggested in this article have been identified which appear to influence the choice of construction: the information status, definiteness, complexity, animacy and semantic relations between head and dependent phrase. Animacy has traditionally been emphasized as the most important factor influencing this choice. However, according to the text frequency, it appeared much less influential than are information status, definiteness and complexity.
It is shown that the s-genitive is closely related to the subject of clauses, and of-phrases to objects, with the opposite tendency, in that the s-genitive is expressed in the preference for simplicity, definiteness, given information, animacy, and subjective relation between head and dependent noun, while of-phrases for new information, complexity, indefiniteness, inanimacy and objective relation between head and dependent noun.
