In Modern English (ModE), the 1st and 2nd person reflexives are composed of a possessive adjective + self (e.g., my+self, your+self, etc.), whereas the 3rd person reflexives consist of an objective pronoun + self (e.g., him+self, them+selves, etc.). This paper addresses this morphological asymmetry and explains when, why, and how the asymmetry occurred during the history of the English language. I suggest that this morphological asymmetry in ModE was caused by a polarization in Old English (OE) reflexivization between the 1st and 2nd persons, on the one hand, and the 3rd person, on the other. The polarization seems to have happened as follows: by the beginning of the Middle English (ME) period, DE [genitive pronoun + self] had been reanalyzed as [possessive adjective + self] for the 1st and 2nd persons, because the 1st and 2nd persons had identical stems for both genitive pronouns and possessive adjectives in OE (e.g., min, ure, pin, and eower). The 3rd person, on the other hand, had no comparable usage in that the OE 3rd person genitive pronouns were simply genitive pronouns and were not yet used as possessive adjectives. In addition, there were 3'd person reflexive possessive adjectives (i.e., sin, sines, sinum, etc.).
