The purpose of this paper is to find out the differences in using function words between Korean high school students and native English speaking high school students. For this purpose, three English corpora have been collected; KES1(intermediate Korean high school students), KES2(advanced Korean high school students), and NES(Native English speaking high school students). Using Wordsmith tool and hand count, the most frequent function words are analysed. As results, the followings have been found out. 1) The frequencies and types of function words are the greatest in NES, the least in KES1. 2) In the word categories, the word frequencies of some categories such as articles, prepositions, relatives are underused in KES1 and KES2; the frequencies of other category words such as personal pronouns, conjunctions are overused in KES1 and KES2. The reason of overuse and underuse are investigated. 3) Both of KESl and KES2 have shown the limited knowledge in the different aspects of writing and speaking register. 4) Especially KES1 has shown the limited use of vocabulary as well as grammatical aspects such as perfect and relative clauses.
