The purpose of this study was to investigate the single-dose oral toxicities of Bulnesia sarmienti single and mixed extracts in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Water extracts of B. sarmienti alone (BS) or mixed with Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and Mori radicis Cortex (BSM) were prepared according to the procedures in Oriental clinics. Five SD rats were orally medicated with 2,000 ㎎/㎏ of BS or BSM to test the substance's toxicity. Over the following fourteen days, subject mortality rate, general symptoms, changes in body weight, and postmortem impressions were observed. Results of the test showed no death in the subjects over the entire test period and no abnormal symptoms in relation to the medicated test substance. Changes in body weight over the duration of the test revealed no significant variance in both male and female test subjects in comparison to the control group (P＞0.05). In addition, postmortem analysis showed no abnormalities in the subject either. In this experiment, no instance of death, body weight change and other abnormal symptoms were observed. In conclusion, the approximate lethal dose (ALD) of the test substance for rats in this single oral-dose toxicity test is inferred to be higher than the upperlimit dosage of 2,000 ㎎/㎏.
