This paper explores the implicature in English face-to-face conversation and computer-mediated communication among native speakers of English and Korean non-native speakers of English in the U.S. It was found that employing various linguistic devices, NS and NNS produce implied meanings and perform indirect speech acts for various interactional goals, and they comprehend and respond to the implied meanings and indirect speech acts based on several linguistic and social factors. This study confirms that NNS’s second language proficiency influences their pragmatic competence, namely the ability to comprehend and produce meaning in context. The findings and observations in this study have suggestions and implications for teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
