Underwater surface survey is a method of research to find out the existence of relic or cultural asset submerged at underwater base of ocean, dam, lake or river which cannot be observed with naked eyes. Underwater survey began in Korea in 1970s, and it has kept developing into a systematic survey process. Underwater surface survey consists of 3 steps, preliminary survey, site survey and detailed survey. Underwater surface survey is mainly conducted with exploration machinery which are used in oceano-geophysics field. The oceano-geophysics approach used nowadays for Underwater surface survey is an effective way to save time and costs in undewater research. However, the approach has some weakness in that it is highly dependent on machinery and that it lacks unity in spacing survey vessel, mobilizing survey manpower or processing data analysis. In this Study I dealt Philological approach and topographicalㆍgeographical approach as the mentioned supplementary methods. Philological approach is a method to scrutinize old documents, by checking closely the recorded names of ports, descriptions on port warehouse, dock or defence installation with wooden barricades, and as the result, to determine whether remains exist in the survey area.. Another supplementary method is topographicalㆍgeographical approach. Korea is a peninsula with her 3 sides surrounded by sea. Difference exists among the oceanic environment of East Sea, West Sea and South Sea, so ports at each Sea would have varying conditions. By topographical approach of the coastal region adjacent to the survey area, we can find out if port facilities, dock or defence installation existed. Geographical approach focused on dwelling settlements would be also helpful to search relics, such as checking land availability at the rear of port with background knowledge on formation and conditions of fishing villages.
