This study aims to examine the geographical texts on the Paekdu mountain. There have been so many historical researches on the Paekdu mountain for more than 50 years, but the greater part of it was on a territorial problem, so it could not get at the kernel of a subject. From the viewpoint of the those days, the heart of a question is the way in which the geographical texts are propagated, and interpreted in Qing and late Choson Dynasty.
For this study, some geographical texts, for example Hwangyeojeonlamdo(皇輿全覽圖), Sudojegang(水道提綱), Seonggyeongtongji(盛京通志), Chengiltongji(淸一統志), Manjuwonlewgo(滿洲原流考), are analyzed and compared in terms of knowledge system.
This study provided some clear evidences. As far at the Paekdu mountain concerned, the geographical texts which were published in Qing period can be classified into two groups. No wonder those text books could not reach a valid conclusion on the Paekdu mountain and the source of some rivers from it. The results also show that the two-grouped knowledges were propagated, and interpreted into Choson on a case by case basis.
