Shin Chaeho, the journalist and independent activist, is well known as the first modern historian in Korea. It is said that he read the books and articles, written by Liang Qi Chao who was also one of the most famous literati in modern China, and became to know the theory of the social evolution and nationalism, and the methodology of modern history as well. Modern history means the discontinuation with the traditional history, but this study is based upon the assumption that we may have the stereotype on the discontinuation between traditional history and the modern history in terms of the methodology and the style.
Some former studies already pointed out the fact that Shin Chaeho had developed his argument under the influence of Lee, Jongwhi, who was the traditional historian in 19th century in Korea, but it is still uncertain if they shared the same point of view on the ancient history. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to know what kind of traditional knowledge was shared, discontinued, reinterpreted, and even distorted by Shin Chaeho, and what kind of possibility we have in this 21th century.
What he understood at that time was that Korean people used the Chinese Character for a long time, and because of that foreign character, Korean people became more dependent. In his opinion, it was a natural phenomenon that Shin, Kison, the modern Confucian made a decision to accept the Japanese Asian strategy.
Some historians, including Han, Backgyum, An, Jeongbok, Han, Chiyoon, Han, Jinseo, Lee Jong whi, and their books were highly estimated, though he always condemned the Choson literati regarding the dependency. He thought that these traditional scholars were talented in the history field and developed their own linguistic methodology, and even emphasized the importance of the broad territory of the Korean ancient dynasty.
We can say that Choson literati and Shin Chaeho shared the practical philosophy, though we still have to pay close attention to say that Shin Chaeho succeeded the traditional history, because he reinterpreted and even distorted the context of the historical fact. The conclusion of this study is that we need to remember the tradition of the practical philosophy no matter how different the contents of the philosophy are.

신채호는 한국 근대사에서 독립운동가, 역사가, 언론인으로서 뚜렷한 족적을 남긴 인물이다. 이 연구는 그 중에서도 역사가로서의 신채호를 다룬 것이다. 신채호는 중국 근대사상가인 량치차오의 저작으로부터 사회진화론과 민족주의 정치사상, 그리고 신사학의 이념과 방법에 눈을 뜨게 되었다. 논리적으로 보면 신사학은 구 사학과의 단절을 전제로 한다. 그러나 이 연구는 이런 전제가 과연 타당한 것인지를 물으려는 것이다. 물론 이런 문제제기가 전혀 없었던 것은 아니다. 선행연구 중에는 신채호가 단군의 치적과 북방사의 전통을 강조하려 한 것은 이종휘 등 조선후기 역사학자의 영향을 받았다는 지적이 있었다. 그러나 고대사에 관한 서술에서 같은 내용이 보인다는 단순한 사실로는 문제의식이 공유되었다고 말하기 어렵다. 이 연구는 신채호와 조선후기 역사학 사이에서 공유된 것과 그렇지 않은 것을 찾고, 그것으로부터 21세기적인 가능성을 전망할 수 있는지 확인하려는 것이다.
신채호는 한자와 한글 혹은 한문과 국문의 관계를 외국문과 내국문, 노예근성과 애국자주의식, 소국의식과 대조선의식, 중화풍속과 國粹을 상징하는 키워드로 대비시켰다. 그는 조선왕조가 사대주의적일 수 밖에 없는 이유를 한자와 한문에서 찾았으며, 한문에 능숙한 당대의 유학자들이 일본인들의 동양주의에 함몰되어 가는 것을 비판했다. 그가 조선의 역사에서 유일하게 희망을 찾은 것은 단군과 고대의 역사를 적은 서적들이었다. 신채호는 한백겸이 제시한 고대의 강역, 안정복과 한진서가 고증 과정에서 구사한 정밀한 연구방법론, 이종휘가 보여준 단군 중심의 역사인식 등을 계승하고자했다. 신채호는 언어를 중시했으며, 청대의 지리지를 활용했다. 이것은 그가 조선후기 역사지리학 연구의 성과에 무심하지 않았기 때문에 가능한 일이었다.
신채호는 안정복과 이종휘에게서 단군과 단군으로부터 이어지는 부여족의 혈연적 연속성, 그리고 을지문덕으로 표상되는 영웅을 발견했다. 그러나 신채호는 단군과 을지문덕에 관해 안정복이나 이종휘가 강조하던 그 의미의 맥락을 철저히 해체했다. 신채호가 안정복과 이종휘로부터 단군과 을지문덕을 계승하려 했다고 말한다면, 그것은 절반의 진실일 뿐인 것이다.
신채호의 역사학은 20세기적인 성취와 한계를 고스란히 보여주고 있다고 할 수 있다. 조선후기 역사연구의 방법론을 계승했지만 그 중화적 사유구조를 받아들이지 않았으며, 중화적 사유구조를 부정했지만 결과적으로는 역사와 지리에 대한 실천적인 문제의식을 공유했다. 21세기 역사학이 신채호를 넘어서야 하는 과제를 안고 있다면, 오랫동안 신채호적인 문제의식에 의해 필터링되었던 조선후기 역사학의 성취야 말로 그 자양분이 될 수도 있을 것이다.
