This study introduced the premixed compression ignition and combustion method and applied turbocharging and EGR to a four-cylinder diesel engine simultaneously in order to improve the NOx and smoke emission performance of the diesel engine. Furthermore, this study examined the exhaust performance improvement and EGR rate limit when a high EGR rate is set up in the HPL (high pressure loop) EGR system to increase the degree of understanding about the turbocharging and EGR in a diesel engine and to provide base data for the performance improvement of turbocharging and the EGR system. For these purposes, this study performed the performance test of a turbocharger, developed a surge limit model, and investigated the correlation between EGR and VGT (variable geometry turbocharger).
With the result of this study, the emission performance could be improved by reducing the compression ratio and applying split injection in the four-cylinder diesel engine. In addition, it was found experimentally that the emission performance could be further improved through the application of high boost and high EGR rate. However, this study provided concrete technical requirements on new turbocharging and EGR systemsby presenting the test result that the technical considerations must be made on the surge limit and EGR rate control for the turbocharger when applying high boost and high EGR rate in existing HPL EGR systems.
