Acknowledging that there are limitations in understanding human development only in terms of cognitive structure, this paper draws on James Fowler's faith stages and proposes personal development as a process through which our capacities for partnership with God are increased and developed. This paper argues that a person grows in faith and fulfills his or her personhood in the context of communities of faith whose characters are essentially personal, that is, turning toward others. For this investigation, the reciprocal relationship between person and community is fully examined in the context of the developing process that Fowler describes. The community's practical theology becomes a major tool that enables its members to engage in “critical theological reflection” in order to participate in God's actions in their own socio-political contexts. Only in the community of faith that relates itself to larger societies through its practical theological reflections can its members participate in God's actions and grow as they relate to others, neighbors, and God through their community
