The purpose of this paper was to integrate development theory with the Bible. This paper showed basic concepts of development theory and illustrated some examples of how development theory can be integrated with the teaching and learning situation and demonstrated in life situations in the Bible.
In terms of cognitive development, this paper discovered that Jesus used disequilibration appropriately and had educational effectiveness. This paper explained the spiritual growth of Peter in view of moral development. He needed to pass through several moral stages in order to be a sincere servant of the Lord. In the area of psychosocial development, this paper connected Paul's life in the Bible to Erikson's stages. Paul accomplished each task of each stage of psychosocial development, and this accomplishment made Paul one of the most influential Christian leaders in history. In the field of faith development, this paper illustrated “Christian faith development” which has a different viewpoint than Fowler's faith development. Christian faith development was categorized based on the analysis of 1 John 2:12-14 as the stage of birth, development, and maturity.
As a result, the concept of development theory could be applied to the teaching and the life of people in the Bible. Findings from the Bible in the view of development theory could be a useful method in the teaching and learning process of Christian Education. Christian educators need to apply more effort to in searching for the integration between the Bible and educational theory in order to establish a balanced “Christian Education.”
