Folk songs contain the lives of people who sing the songs. Therefore, through folk songs, we can find out the lives and experiences of our ancestors. This study is an examination of weeding songs of Gyeongbuk area. Weeding was mostly done by women and these songs contain the thoughts and lives of women. Women’s lives are revealed directly in the words but the form of music is also related to their lives.
75 weeding songs identified in Gyeongsangbuk-do can be classified into 3 types; ① Buddhist chant style weeding songs using Menaritori ② Weeding songs with melodies borrowed from Jeongjasori of Gyeongsangbuk-do and ③ Weeding songs using Gyeongtori. Buddhist chant like weeding songs using Menaritori and weeding songs with melodies of Jeongjasori are frequently found not only in Gyeongbuk but also in Gyeongnam. These are the representative types of weeding songs of Gyeongsang-do. Weeding songs using the melodies of Jeongjasori are also found in Chungcheongbuk-do. From this, it can be said that the weeding songs of Chungcheongbuk-do are influenced by the folk songs of Gyeongsang-do. Simple tunes of woe are similar to Heunggeulsori of folk songs of Jeollabuk-do.
Words of weeding songs of Gyengsangbuk-do can be classified into two types. One is songs about the hard married life and the other is about longing for the loved one. Of these two types, songs about the hard married life are predominant. And these songs are further divided into two types; one is becoming a monk due to hard life and returning to her husband’s family after having been to her family home for alms, and another is going to her family home for funeral. Both types are songs about nowhere to rest her mind whether it is her husband’s family or her own family. And many of these songs end in visiting the graves of her husband’s family as they are all dead when she comes back. The songs about longing for the loved one mostly express women’s feeling of loneliness emotionally using metaphor rather than directly. But in some songs, the woman sets out to look for her loved one. These words types are found throughout Gyeongsangbuk-do and there is no regional difference and words do not differ according to music either.
