Hwachoeng is the musical result of missionary activities of Buddhism as a trial to make Buddhism popular. It is a precious cultural asset to Korean Music.
It is considered to be worthwhile to study as music in the form of a song with ethnic emotion from the prehistory times to the modern times.
Here are the summary of the results of the disscussion up to now.
First, Hwacheong means the invitation to Bulbosal. It became a song by putting ‘Yul’ on the pre-existing verse. All the buddhist songs except Beompae can be classified as Hwacheong. As anyone can create it because ‘Yul’ goes freely, we can classify it as popular music.
Second, when we see its musical characteristics of Hwacheong, tune and musical scale is Major Key D, which is similar to Folk Song Tune and Musical Scale of the Eastern Part such as Menarijo that uses the three keys Mi-Ra-Do. Among them Ra is most frequently used.
Third, rhythm is mostly 9/8 and sometimes we can see other rhythms such as 4/8, 12/8, and 15/8. For the pattern, it does not have special pattern unlike other musical notes. It has the pattern of A-A'-A''-A'''.
Fourth, Hwacheong is classified as free style music. From the analysis of the collected notes, we could confirm that they do not have uniform or consistent rhythm or phrase. Although they have the same words in the first phrase, they have different verse from the second phrase.
Hwachong can be considered as our unique and original music in our history. We need to try diverse and various approaches to it, perceiving it as inclusive and pure music in our musical history.
